About Energy Focus
Energy Focus is an industry-leading company that got its start in fiber-optic lighting technology in 1985 under the name Fiberstars Inc. Based out of Solon, Ohio, Fiberstars started working with the US Navy back in 2003 after receiving a $10 million contract to improve the energy efficiency of solar panels on ships.
In 2007, Fiberstars Inc. changed its name to Energy Focus Inc. and began trading on NASDAQ as EFOI. At the time, Energy Focus’ EFO fiber-optic lighting systems were used in retail stores, commercial buildings, and pools and spas and used up to 80 percent less energy than conventional lights, however, the future of energy-efficient lighting was in LEDs.
In 2011, Energy Focus was able to continue researching cutting-edge LED technology after winning a $23 million contract with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to install explosion-proof globes and retrofit existing T12 fluorescent tubes on Navy ships with energy-efficient LED tubes. To date, Energy Focus has installed over 500,000 lamps on every surface ship in the Navy’s fleet.
Today, Energy Focus has expanded out into the commercial market for LED lighting but still continues to work with the U.S. Navy. There have been less than 100 returns out of over 650,000 installed LED products over an 11-year period of working with the U.S. Navy. This is a less than half of 1% return rate out of 11 years. There is a story worth mentioning that stands as a testament to the longevity of Energy Focus LED products.
