Can direct-wire installation modes cause fires?

Direct wire lamps do not utilize existing fluorescent ballasts and so completely avoid failures associated with existing ballasts of unknown age. In addition, all of our lamps are internally fused for added protection.

Our 300D and 500D Series direct wire LED tubes are single ended electrically connected, labeled (Input). The tube’s other end is safe for handling, and is mechanically connected, non-electrical. As a result, unlike fluorescents, we measure zero current in UL’s electric shock hazard test. A non-shunted lamp holder is required to support the two power leads for single ended, direct wire installation. The replacement of existing lamp holders (“tombstones”) is recommended when retrofitting. Energy Focus can supply UL approved lamp holders if needed.

Energy Focus has provided hundreds of thousands of direct wire lamps for retrofit many of which have been in place for several years without incident. And, of course, Energy Focus lamps and lamp retrofit kits meet all UL approvals. UL approved luminaires retain their UL approval when retrofitted with Energy Focus TLED lamps.

Why are LED more expensive than traditional lighting?

When purchasing lighting the cost per tube is probably the biggest deciding factor but if we switch that thought process to how much you’re spending to light the tube, the cost per tube lowers. LED tubes are made of high quality components which does increase the cost but it uses less wattage, requires lower maintenance, and has a longer lifetime. This make the total cost per tube lower than any fluorescent or incandescent light.

LED technology is the same as conventional lighting technology?

This is definitely a myth as an LED (LED stands for Light Emitting Diode) is a two lead semiconductor that produces visible light when an electrical current passed through them. A yellow layer of phosphor material then produces the “white” light we see with our eyes. LED tubes also utilize heat sinks that regulate the temperature and prevent the tube from heating up. This is not found in conventional fluorescent or incandescent lighting. With Energy Focus’s tubes the heat sink is designed into the aluminum backing.
Incandescent bulbs produce light using electricity to heat a metal filament until it becomes “white” hot or is said to incandesce. Incandescent produces heat in addition to light; in fact incandescent bulbs release 90% of their energy as heat. It actually serves as a better heater than a provider of light.

In a Fluorescent or CFL lamp, an electric current flows between electrodes at each end of a tube containing gases. This reaction produces ultraviolet (UV) light and heat. The UV light is transformed into visible light when it strikes a phosphor coating on the inside of the bulb.

Can I integrate controls with LED products?

Integrated controls can be used with LED tubes that include a 0-10V dimming feature or if the LED tube is used in a direct-fit mode and also utilizes a dimming ballast. The reason integrated controls are desired to comply with certain requirements (like California Title Code 24), or to have total control of your system by utilizing sensors like daylight controls and occupancy sensors.

Energy Focus has ballast compatible tubular LED series, Intellitube, what ballasts can this series work with?

We have a Ballast Compatibility List that can be found on the Downloads Section of the Intellitube product page: https://energyfocus.com/product/intellitube/

Why would you install a tube in direct wire mode when you can install it with a ballast?

A direct wire TLED will connect to the main power and the ballast will have to be removed. The Intellitube does both direct wire and direct fit and can operate normally with the ballast. The difference is cost and savings; you will capture more saving and less cost with the direct wire vs. the Intellitube. The Intellitube is for the clients that have newer facilities and or remodeled in the past few years, that can say they now have LED with just changing a lamp. NO LABOR COSTS with the retrofit of the Intellitube.

What are the highest/lowest operating and ambient temperatures for all of our TLEDs?

-20 deg C to +40 deg. C.
